Earlier today, the longlist for the 2020 Dagger Awards was announced by the Crime Writers’ Association (CWA) of the United Kingdom. The Daggers date back to 1955, making them the longest-running awards in the crime and mystery genre. (The first went to Winston Graham, of Poldark fame.) The winners will be announced at a ceremony on October 22nd. In the meantime, the longlist is always a useful guide to the very best crime fiction publishing in the UK.

This award is for the best crime novel by an author of any nationality. It was originally created in 1955, under the name of the Crossed Red Herrings Award. It was renamed the Gold Dagger in 1960.
