It’s the Fourth of July! And it’s a proper 3-day weekend! At least! You can spend this weekend outside in the fresh air! You can also spend it inside, or at least a healthy blend of the two. So, for the times you’re inside: sit in front of your TV, pump your AC and tune into one of these new summery crime shows.
Happy watching!
Death Valley, Season One
If you watch nothing else, this Fourth of July weekend, it should be Death Valley. Timothy Spall plays a retired actor who used to play a beloved detective on TV! And he and a young, ambitious detective sergeant team up to solve mysteries together, in the Welsh Countryside. You know what they say: the show must go on! And if this show doesn’t go on, I will fling myself off the highest mountain in Snowdonia. (That’s in Wales.)

Revival, Season One
The conceit of Revival (which is based on Tim Seeley and Mike Norton’s graphic novel series of the same name) reminds me a bit of the conceit of Pushing Daisies: one day, the recently deceased population of a small Wisconsin town awake as if they never died in the first place. While most of the residents are grappling with the supernatural, metaphysical, and spiritual aspects of this seeming-miracle, police officer Dana Cypress must solve a murder investigation where the victim, herself, is alive again.

AND there are rumored appearances from John Lithgow and Jimmy Smits… which, if you’ve seen Dexter, you know is going to lead to some fascinating flashbacks.
