A mystery lover’s guide to what’s new to streaming this weekend.

New and Returning Mystery and Thriller Series

Imperfect Women
(Apple TV+)
This adaptation of the Araminta Hall thriller has a stellar cast: Elisabeth Moss, Kerry Washington, Corey Stoll, Kate Mara, Joel Kinnaman, and Leslie Odom Jr. The story follows the long friendship of three women, with a crime and subsequent investigation hanging over the relationship. Two episodes release to start, with more to come over the next month.
The Count of Monte Cristo
(PBS)
I’m going to pretty much watch any and all PBS Masterpiece offerings, especially ones that feature Jeremy Irons. This new adaptation of the classic Dumas revenge thriller stars Sam Claflin as Edmond Dantès and Jeremy Irons as Abbé Faria. If I had my way, we’d have a new adaptation of a 19th century door-stopper every month. But things as they are, we better savor the ones we get and say thanks to PBS.
Radioactive Emergency
(Netflix)
The English-language title makes it pretty clear what this one is about, right? The new Brazilian series, directed by Fernando Coimbra, dramatizes the events surrounding the 1987 Goiânia accident, when hikers came across radioactive material from an old hospital, setting off a dire public emergency. All episodes of the limited series are available now.

Movie Night

The movie choice of the weekend has to be Roofman, directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Behind the Pines) and starring Channing Tatum. The movie, based on the life of Jeffrey Manchester, had a brief but successful run in theaters last fall and hits Prime for streaming this week. Tatum plays a veteran fallen on hard times who decides to rob a series of McDonald’s by drilling through the roofs; also, he’s living in a toy store. Tatum turns in a strong, complex performance that’s well worth a watch. Or, if you’re in the mood for something historical, and you’ve been following the exploits of the Shelby family, you could turn over to Netflix for the new movie, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which picks up the Birmingham action during World War II and delivers on the usual extreme violence and melodrama loyal viewers have come to expect from the long-running series.
And 5 more movies new to the streaming libraries:
The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) (Prime)
Witness for the Prosecution (1958) (Prime)
Zombieland (2009) (Netflix)
The Insider (1999) (Hulu/Disney+)
My Cousin Vinny (1992) (Hulu/Disney+)
