New and Returning Mystery and Thriller Series

RJ Decker
(ABC)
In case the name doesn’t immediately ring a bell, RJ Decker is a former photojournalist turned PI and the lead character in Carl Hiaasen’s excellent bass-fishing-fraud-in-Florida novel, Double Whammy. Here, Scott Speedman, who you’ll probably remember as Ben in Felicity, is in the lead role and looks to be having an awful lot of fun with it. The series is created by Rob Doherty, who also created the long running hit, Elementary, so he has a history of turning smart crime fiction into smart, entertaining TV.
Young Sherlock
(Prime)
Well, from the title alone, you basically know what this is. The series is from Guy Ritchie, which might be an enticement or a turn-off, depending on how you’ve experienced the director’s work over the years, or how you received his last go-around with the Arthur Conan Doyle hero. This time, the action centers on the consulting detective’s pre-Baker Street adventures, when he was just finding his way through the mean streets of Oxford, in his university days.
The Lincoln Lawyer, season 4
(Netflix)
If you’re in the mood for a long binge watch and haven’t checked in on this Michael Connelly series in a while, now would be a great time, with a new season fully available on Netflix. The series still stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller, and now features Neve Campbell returning for the new season in an expanded role. That’s a pretty promising baseline for a series that has proven to be a stalwart of legal dramas.

Movie Night
___________________________________
This weekend if you’re sitting down looking for a good watchable movie, you’re probably going to want to be firing up Netflix. First they have Nuremberg, a historical drama about, well, as you may have guessed, the Nuremberg trials. In this version of the famous proceedings, we’re following Rami Malek’s psychiatrist examining various defendants, with a special focus on the strange and complex bond he’s forming with the notorious Nazi figure Hermann Göring, played by Russell Crowe. It’s a new approach to the trials, and a fresh take on the historical psychodrama, with some top-notch performances. And if you’re in the mood for something a little wilder and grittier, and you’re a fan of the Peaky Blinders series, you could also try the new follow-up feature, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which unites most of the series cast, including Cillian Murphy, for a story that follows the Shelby family through the WWII years. The movie’s premiere was held in Birmingham earlier this week; now the movie’s available for the wider legions of worldwide Peaky Blinders fans.
And 5 more movies new to the streaming libraries:
We Own the Night (2007) (Tubi)
Sicario (2015) (Netflix)
Desperado (1995) (Netflix)
All the President’s Men (1976) (HBO)
Raising Arizona (1987) (Hulu/Disney)
