Attention, heist fans! A new adaptation of The Thomas Crown Affair is coming out, next spring! Yes, a new adaptation!
You might be wondering, a third Thomas Crown Affair? But the previous two (1969, starring Steve McQueen, and 1999, starring Pierce Brosnan) were both great! Well, this is a phenomenon I now think of as The Cape Fear paradox. We had two excellent Cape Fears, and they made a third one anyway, and it was a good time. Now we live in a world with three Cape Fears!
And now we live in a world with three Thomas Crown Affairs!
Newly-minted Best Actor Academy Award winner Michael B. Jordan stars as Thomas Crown in this star-studded film also featuring Kenneth Branagh, Adria Arjona, Danai Gurira, and Lily Gladstone. He also directs and produces the film, from a script written by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, and The Fall Guy) and Jason Hall (American Sniper, Gran Turismo).
I think this is very fun. If I had just recently won the Oscar for Best Actor and were also one of the most bankable and popular young stars working today, I too would give myself the opportunity to play an ultra suave gentleman thief.
Now, The Thomas Crown Affair is an interesting thing to adapt because both of its previous iterations are very sexy, lusty affairs where the leads have insane chemistry. Apparently, Adria Arjona plays the Faye Dunaway/Rene Russo role. We’ll see if it’s as steamy! Let’s hope so!
What are the particulars of the plot? I don’t know. In the trailer, Thomas Crown races a car and walks up some stairs. [p-;-0The tagline is “revenge is a work of art,” which is an odd tagline because I don’t remember “revenge” as a motivating factor for the previous two films. Thomas Crown is bored; that’s why he does what he does. I looked to the IMDb description for greater clarity, but it just says “third take on the Thomas Crown Affair movies,” so that is no help to me.
“As Crown, Jordan faces off against a former FBI agent (Adria Arjona) hunting him heist by heist. Meanwhile, an insidious supervillain (Kenneth Branagh) lurks, threatening to take Crown down. But Crown’s true motives are to return precious stolen or sold artifacts to their rightful creators.
Jordan says, “’I didn’t want a reboot. I wanted a reimagination. The first two films were about rich white guys stealing for fun. That doesn’t land today. Ours is more personal. The stakes are higher. Still got the fashion, romance.'”
Interesting. Well, I guess we’ll just have to wait for more info!
