This is easily my choice for the week, and not least because I’ll be visiting my parents, and obviously this is a show to watch with your parents. It’s the latest from mystery stalwart Anthony Horowitz, this time following the investigation into the murder of a children’s author, and gracefully taking the action to Corfu for a spell. Lesley Manville stars as Susan Ryeland.

A police dispatcher receives a call he believes to be from his missing daughter, in this gut-punch of a new series from Apple TV, by way of Australia. It might feel at times like a Harlan Coben project, but I assure you, those are over on Netflix, all one hundred and twenty two of them, and counting. (We’re big Coben fans here, for the record.)

Movie Night

For movies, the pick of the week is probably Mayday, streaming on Apple TV+, and I say that with some reservations, since, if I’m being honest, this is what my wife was watching in the other room while I was watching the Patriots blow a lead to the Seahawks. I caught a few pieces here and there. It seemed charming enough to me — a buddy survival movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, I mean, that pairing has potential. They’re in the Soviet wilderness and they need to get out, and honestly, it was kind of funny and snappy in pieces. It might be leaning a bit too heavily into the Ryan Reynolds schtick, and not enough into the Kenneth Branagh shtick, at least for my tastes, but still, that’s a pretty solid movie formula. Or, if you’re in the mood for a high-octane, high-concept, low-sense thriller this weekend, check out Gal Godot running across London following directions from some sort of kidnapper / aspiring trainer, in, you guessed it, The Runner, streaming on Prime. Damian Lewis is in this one, too, but sadly he’s not in Henry VIII costume, and Mark Rylance is nowhere to be seen. (Which is my way of saying, if you want some alternate programming, you could add PBS channel to your Prime account and flip straight over from Runner to Wolf Hall.)
