Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, Season 2
(Netflix)  

Season 1 of the series based on Holly Jackson’s novel was great fun, not least because Emma Meyers (Wednesday) as effervescent teen Pip Fitz-Amobi and Zain Iqbal as the more brooding Ravi Singh are a well-matched sleuthing pair. Now they’re back in Season 2 to investigate the disappearance of a witness in a murder trial. Let’s see whether the new season, which just dropped, matches the easy watching pleasures of the original. 

The Last Thing He Told Me
(Apple TV)

Another series based on a bestselling novel and dealing with a disappearance, this time a thriller by Laura Dave. With Jennifer Garner as Hannah Hall and Angourie Rice as her stepdaughter, who search for Hannah’s unexpectedly missing husband. In Season 2, Hannah’s up against the organized crime family that’s trying to kill him. Expect plenty of suspense and absorbing stepmom/stepdaughter dynamics.

The Mauritanian (2021) (Pluto) Based on the real case of Mahamedou Ould Slahi who was grabbed from his home and held for years in Guantanamo Bay on the suspicion that he was one of the organizers of 9/11. What’s most amazing about this gripping story is that despite the cruel and inhumane treatment Slahi received, and the injustice of his case, he held on to his humanity. With Tahar Rahim as Slahi, Jodie Foster, Shailene Woodley, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

No Way Out (1987) (Criterion) One of Kevin Costner’s best movies. A twisty tale about a young naval officer (Costner) who’s in a relationship with a woman, Susan Atwell (Sean Young), who also happens to be the mistress of the Secretary of Defense (Gene Hackman). When the Secretary kills Susan in a fit of rage and then puts into place a cover story to suggest that Susan has been having an affair with a Russian mole, Costner’s character finds that he’s under suspicion for the murder.
