If Wishes Could Kill
(Netflix)
Apps appear to be in the streaming zeitgeist—for instance, in this eight-part YA Korean horror series about a group of teens who find an app that grants their wishes—and then discover that it also sets a countdown to their deaths. Director Park Yoon-seo combines occult, action, and school drama, saying: “I wanted to go beyond the limits of standard horror. By combining different genres, I made sure there is never a dull moment from the beginning to the last episode.”
DTF St. Louis
(HBO Max)
And apps show up in again in this “dark comedy” starring Jason Bateman, David Harbour, and Linda Cardellini. Two middle-aged men (Bateman and Harbour) are searching for connection and one ends up dead. The death appears to be connected to a hook-up app for married couples called “DTF St. Louis”—but of course there’s more going on here—an investigation of male vulnerability, friendship, and sexuality, for starters.

If you’re in the mood for something heisty, plotted, and stylish, perhaps consider Crime 101 (2026) (Prime Video). With Chris Hemsworth playing a jewel thief in Los Angeles; Mark Ruffalo the detective on his trail; and Halle Berry as an insurance broker who helps Mike out. Based on Don Winslow’s novel by the same name.
I’m also curious about the true-crime documentary Yiya Murano: Death at Tea Time (2026) (Netflix) about a wife and mother who killed three women by poison in the 1970s and became Argentina’s first female serial killer. The Buenos Aires Herald notes that Yiya was an avid reader of Agatha Christie novels and her story fascinated the country, becoming “the subject of a mainstream musical that premiered in 2016…with songs by Ale Sergi from Miranda, one of the country’s most popular pop bands.” And now a documentary that the rest of us can stream from home.
And 5 more movies new to the streaming libraries:
Sirat (2025) (Hulu)
Pretty Lethal (2025) (Prime Video)
Safe House (2012) (Tubi)
Kandahar (2023) (Pluto)
One Battle After Another (2025) (HBO Max)
