HBO has placed a series order, with Damon Lindelof set as the showrunner. Lindelof of Lost and The Leftovers, is extremely enthusiastic about McKinty’s novel, telling The Hollywood Reporter “From the moment I heard the wild and original premise of Adrian’s book, I was shocked, surprised and angry I hadn’t thought of it myself.”

The Chain, which came out in 2019 and was a New York Times bestseller, is a thriller with horror notes, about a kidnapping gambit where parents are forced to kidnap a child in order to release their own kidnapped child, forming a gigantic chain of kidnappings. Stephen King called the novel “nightmarish,” which is, really, all the endorsement anyone needs.
