The Bombing of Pan Am 103

This chronicle of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing is far and away one of the best detective series you’ll come across this year. The show, which stars Connor Swindells, Patrick J. Adams, and Merritt Weaver, focuses on the years-long investigation into the tragedy, the battle on behalf of victims’ families, and the incredibly complex cross-jurisdictional hurdles to the detectives taking on the case. On the one hand, yes, this is a procedural, an exceptionally well done procedural, but it has more heart and more complex human drama than you’ll find just about anywhere else on streaming.

The latest show from New Girl and The Dropout creator Elizabeth Meriweather follows an FBI agent and a serial killer locked in an intricate cat-and-mouse struggle, with an unusual bond forming between the two women through their shared experiences of violence. The tone has traces of Thomas Harris, but with a twisted satire running through the whole thing, more in the vein of American Psycho.

If you’re in the mood for some wild folk horror, check out Nightborn (Shudder / AMC+), the recent film about a family with a new baby who seems to have, let’s say, an alarmingly strong connection with the woods, and also, a lot of hair, and also, some other signs that maybe the kid is not exactly who (or what) his parents thought he would be. The movie manages its sense of dread pretty deftly, and there’s enough weirdness involved to give the whole thing kind of a fun energy. Or you could try out the buzzy A24 film, The Drama (HBO Max), which sort of starts out feeling like a romantic drama and slow burns its way straight into psychological thriller territory. You’ve probably heard about this one, and you’ve probably even heard about the big twist that gives the movie its central concept, but on the off chance you missed all the hype, this is the one where Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are about to get married when they make the mistake of admitting to the worst thing they’ve ever done, and hers is way, way, way worse than anyone was expecting, which pretty much throws their lives into utter turmoil.
