New and Returning Mystery and Thriller Series

Dexter: Resurrection, season 2
(Paramount)

If you haven’t been keeping up on the expanded Dexter universe, this is the spinoff / continuation series that’s actually really good! (For a full guide to the spinoff universe, Olivia Rutigliano has you covered here.)  Resurrection has a knack for using guest stars extremely effectively (like the original series did, season to season) and this time around, it’s Brian Cox bringing a jolt of electricity to the story of Dexter’s days in New York City.

Nocturne
(Apple TV)

Liev Schreiber and Stephen Graham star in this new serial killer / FBI agent cat-and-mouse thriller. It’s a very Hannibal Lecter setup, but with a few dark twists of its own along the way. For fans of the genre, this is well worth the time: a high-quality production with all the trappings we expect from a story about a serial killer mastermind.

Movie Night

___________________________________

It’s Halloween weekend, so I’m assuming most people looking to stream a movie at home will be looking toward the horror and supernatural ends of the genre. But I’m going to get way more specific than that and recommend a duo of witchy Massachusetts set movies, starting with The Crucible (Prime), the 1996 film from director Nicholas Hytner, working off a script by Arthur Miller himself. starring Daniel Day-Lewis as John Procter and Wynona Ryder as Abigail Williams. Filming was done in Massachusetts and Nova Scotia, and the whole production has that wind-swept woebegone Bay Colony atmosphere down perfectly. From there, it’s a short trip over the marshlands to The Witches of Eastwick (HBO), starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer. It’s of course based on the John Updike novel, back in a simpler time when America was still fascinated by adultery and middle aged sexual awakenings. Also, there’s some magic involved, and rituals, so it works for Halloween viewing.

Plus 5 new additions to the libraries…

Born on the 4th of July (1989) (HBO Max)
Harlem Nights (1989) (Tubi)
Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003) (Tubi)
Casino (1885) (Prime)
Fletch (1995) (Prime)
