Sugar, season 2
(Apple TV)
Okay, so I’m going to tread very, very lightly here and let you know, in case you’re not already aware, that this is a show about Colin Farrell playing a hardboiled private detective, there’s a new season coming out, and the end of the first season took a very, very interesting turn that sort of alters everything you think about the story and the genre its inhabiting. It was one of the bolder twists I’ve seen on TV in a while. Farrell’s back in the new season with a lot of new cast members, and it’s well worth your time to jump in with Sugar now.
I Will Find You
(Netflix)
Sam Worthington stars in the latest Harlan Coben mystery on Netflix. The story follows a wrongfully imprisoned father who breaks out of jail after learning about new evidence in his son’s murder. It’s a big season for Harlan Coben fans, and if you’re so inclined, you could spend most of your waking entertainment hours reading and watching his work.

Movie Night

For movie options this weekend, you’ve got a few to choose from. The one I feel like we’re supposed to want to watch is How to Make a Killing, starring Glen Powell as an aspiring heir killing off a bunch of privileged relatives in front of him on the family line. It’s kind of a comedy thriller, and a clever concept, although to me it feels way too calculated to jump on the ‘eat the rich’ bandwagon Hollywood has been driving, with the utmost cynicism, these last few years. So, I’m letting you know the movie is there, but also admitting that probably I’m going to skip this one, despite really quite liking Glen Powell and co-star Margaret Qualley. Another option would be 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (Prime), the new installment in the rejuvenated 28 Years Later franchise, this one starring Ralph Fiennes and Josh O’Connell. And finally, the real choice of the weekend, provided you have access to some of the more film nerdier streaming services, is Sirāt, the desert chase thriller, as a father searches the Moroccan desert for his daughter who went missing during a music festival, teaming up with some unexpected fellow-searchers along the way.
