New and Returning Mystery and Thriller Series

Spider-Noir
(Prime Video)
Set in the 1930s, this stylish new series combines the look and storytelling of film noir and the superhero genre. Nicholas Cage plays Ben Reilly, an old-school gumshoe detective, who had been a crime fighter called Spider in the past. When an evil mobster and his monstrous henchmen terrorize the city, Reilly pulls out his retro spidey-suit. With a colorful cast of supporting characters including Reilly’s mouthy secretary (Karen Rodriguez) and a gorgeous night-club chanteuse (Li Jun Li). For an extra bit of fun, you can choose whether to watch the series in black-and-white or color.
Bring Me Back the Beauties
(HBO Max)
A three-part docuseries about the male model Hoyt Richards who, along with other models and socialites was lured into the Eternal Values cult headed by Frederick von Mierers in the 1980s and 90s. Richards ended up spending almost twenty years in the cult and financing it with millions of dollars of his own earnings. Director Chris Smith says: “Sometimes you can look at cult stories and not see much commonality between yourself and the people who were involved… Hoyt is so well-spoken, so present. He doesn’t seem like what we imagine a cult member to be. That changes the whole thing. Suddenly you realize that something like this could happen to anyone.”

Keeping Up With the Joneses (2016) (Hulu) This comedy/action film is funnier and more entertaining than I thought it would be when I first took a chance on it several years ago. Jeff, a human resources manager and Karen, an interior designer (Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher) are a nice suburban couple who are smitten by their glamorous new neighbors, a travel writer and cooking blogger (Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot). But when Karen begins to suspect the other couple of hiding secrets, sparks begin to fly. Perfect for an evening when you just want to be carried away by the action and veg out.
Cop Land (1997) (Tubi). Outside of Rocky, possibly my favorite Sylvester Stallone movie. Stallone plays the sensitive and well-meaning sheriff of a small New Jersey town who has to confront the corrupt New York City cops who live there. With a cast of stars including Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert De Niro.
And 4 more movies new to the streaming libraries:
System (2026) (Prime Video)
The Marked Woman (2026) (Netflix)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) (Hulu)
One More Shot (2024) (Pluto)
