A mystery lover’s guide to what’s new to streaming this weekend.

New and Returning Mystery and Thriller Series

Criminal Record, Season 2
(Apple TV)
For fans of British cop shows: Flinty DCI Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) and DS June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) fight crime and each other against a background of systemic corruption in London. Season 2 brings far-right weapons trafficker Cosmo Thompson (Dustin Demri-Burns from Slow Horses) into the mix. Looks grim, stylish, and extremely watchable.
Nemesis
(Netflix)
An LAPD Cop at the end of his rope vs a master thief who pulls of daring heists. I’m hearing good things about Nemesis, starring Matthew Law, Y’Lan Noel, and Gabrielle Dennis. The word is that the episodes get better and better as the series unfolds, raising the stakes, and ratchetting up the tension—so definitely worth a try.

The Woman King (2022) (Tubi) Viola Davis stars as General Nanisca in this period drama set in West Africa. She trains a new generation of women warriors to fight their local enemies as well as European slave traders. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood was inspired by an all-female group of West African warriors known as the Agojie, and movies like Gladiator and Last of the Mohicans.
Atom Egoyan’s award-winning film, The Sweet Hereafter (1997) (Criterion) explores the aftermath of a tragic school bus accident in which 14 children are killed. Set in a small town in British Columbia, the story unfolds out of sequence, in bits and pieces that pull you into the grief, accusations, and conflicting memories that surround a devastating event.
And 4 more movies new to the streaming libraries:
Don’t Leave Home Alone (2018) (Prime Video)
Sleeping Dogs (2024) (Pluto)
No Country for Old Men (2007) (Tubi)
The Prestige (2006) (Hulu)
